Schools workdhops
In the early months of 2007 Stephen Freeman School lost a number of its trees within its grounds. Local tree surgeons had been used to cut the trees into smaller sections and some of the material was removed. However, the head teacher and staff wanted to take advantage of their situation and try and use the remaining timber as a means of providing education and practical experience for the children both inside and outside of the classroom. After several meetings a class/ activities plan was drawn up, beginning on Monday and ending on Friday.
With my help the children created some very imaginative work including puppets, bird boxes, a giant wooden noughts and crosses game and wooden caterpillars. I also carved a seat in the stump of a fallen tree (to be used as a story telling chair), picnic seats and table and some giant toadstools and insects. All these things can be seen in their school grounds, or in the organic-art gallery.
